Fall, which officially begins on September 23rd, is full of celebrations. The first celebration of the season is the German celebration Oktoberfest, which began this year on September 17th, and runs through October 3rd. Oktoberfest originated in 1810 as a celebration of the marriage of Bavarian Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildbrughausen. With only a few exceptions due to war and famine, Oktoberfest has taken place every year since. This year’s celebration opened with the official tapping of the first keg by Oberbürgermeister Christian Ude, the mayor of Munich. After shouting, “O’zapft is!” (“it’s tapped!”), cannon shots ring out, signaling that the beer can officially start to flow. Oktoberfest in Munich runs through Oct 3rd, and there are also many Octoberfest celebrations here in the USA.
